九州の静かな町で暮らす17歳の少女・鈴芽が、「扉を探している」という旅の青年・草太に出会うところから始まる。
鈴芽は草太と一緒に、日本各地にある災いの出口である“扉”を閉じていくことになる。その過程で、鈴芽は自分の過去や草太の秘密、そして扉とミミズという謎の存在に関わる神話に触れていく。鈴芽と草太は、愛媛、兵庫、東京などを巡りながら、様々な人々や出来事に出会う。しかし、彼らの旅は危険と別れに満ちており、やがて鈴芽は草太を失ってしまう。鈴芽は草太を取り戻すために、自分が通れる唯一の扉から常世へと向かう決意をする。
果たして鈴芽は草太と再会できるのか？
The story begins when Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets Sota, a traveling young man who is "looking for a door." Together with Sota, Suzume will close the "doors" that are the exits of disasters in various parts of Japan. Along the way, Suzume comes into contact with myths about her past, Sota's secrets, and the mysterious existence of doors and earthworms. Suzume and Sota meet various people and events while traveling around Ehime, Hyogo, and Tokyo. However, their journey is full of dangers and partings, and eventually Suzume loses Sota. In order to get Souta back, Suzume decides to head for Tokoyo through the only door she can pass through. Will Suzume be able to meet Souta again?
