2022年に世界初のVRMMORPG（仮想現実大規模多人数同時参加型オンラインロールプレイングゲーム）としてサービスが開始された「ソードアート・オンライン」（SAO）にログインした約1万人のプレイヤーが、ゲームをクリアしない限りログアウトできず、ゲーム内で死ぬと現実でも死ぬことを告げられ、デスゲームに巻き込まれる。 主人公のキリトは、このデスゲームから脱出するために戦い続けるが、その過程でさまざまな仮想世界や事件に関わっていく。キリトは仮想世界で出会ったヒロインのアスナや他の仲間たちと共に、現実と仮想の境界を超えた冒険を繰り広げていく。
